Practicing proper oral hygiene at home is essential to keep your teeth cavity-free and prevent gum disease. However, many people do not properly clean their teeth at home. They may brush too little or avoid flossing and rinsing, which may lead to dental problems.
Soult & Swanson Family Dentistry and Implant Center recommends you come in for teeth cleanings every six months and more often if you have some dental issues. Call us today to schedule an appointment and read on to learn more about dental cleaning procedures and the importance of routine teeth cleaning and care.
Dental Cleaning Procedure
The dentist begins the teeth cleaning with an examination. Using a dental mirror, they check all of the teeth thoroughly, as well as the gums and the rest of the mouth. They take X-rays to see the condition of the jaw bones and the interior of the teeth. For adult patients, they may also take swab samples to screen for oral cancer.
After the dentist examines the teeth, they remove plaque and tartar from around the gum line. Plaque is a sticky coating that builds up around the gumline. Good oral health habits at home, including thorough brushing, flossing, and use of an anti-plaque rinse, keep plaque from building up.
If not thoroughly removed, plaque hardens into tartar. Tartar is calcified plaque and, once hardened, can only be removed by a dentist. During a teeth cleaning, the dentist uses a scaler tool to gently scrape away the residual plaque and any tartar accumulation around the gumline.
After scaling, the dentist brushes your teeth. The powered toothbrush uses a spinning head to polish away any remaining plaque and debris. Then, the dentist flosses your teeth, and you rinse your mouth thoroughly, removing any remaining impurities.
Finally, the hygienist may apply a fluoride treatment to the surface of the teeth to help prevent future build-up of plaque and protect the teeth.
Benefits of Dental Cleaning
Proper care and cleaning of your teeth have many health and cosmetic benefits. Regular cleanings will:
- Help prevent gum disease and tooth loss
- Help prevent cavities and tooth decay
- Identify future problems such as jaw deterioration, mouth sores, or oral cancer
Regular teeth cleanings not only benefit your oral health but your overall health as well. Tooth decay causes bacteria that can be very dangerous if they reach the bloodstream, leading to serious health issues for your heart and brain. Maintaining your oral health with routine cleanings keeps these bacteria under control.
Teeth cleanings also have cosmetic benefits. Removing plaque and tartar build-up, along with the stains and discoloration they cause, improves the look of your smile and helps eliminate bad breath, too.
